5 Myths About Engagement Rings That Guys Fall for

Now, I am speaking broadly here but generally, there’s a big difference between men and women and that is how we shop. Women have this innate sense of what is good and what is not, ie. we have a natural ability to shop well. Over the years we develop our personal style, we know what complements our look and what does not. Many of the male population stick to a well-worn formula when it comes to shopping, buy the first thing from the first shop that is fit for the purpose and doesn’t break the bank. Done. Easy right? Think again.
The journey of purchasing an engagement ring is a fine example of a man being forced out of their comfort zone. It is a steep learning curve, often the first experience of purchasing a fine piece of jewellery. Along the way, there are many myths that men will understandably believe. If unaware, this can be costly and disappointing later down the track. To help navigate the minefield of misinformation, we have put together a list of the 5 biggest myths when it comes to purchasing an engagement
1. You Must Spend Three Month’s Salary
Once upon a time, it was said you should spend one month’s salary on an engagement ring, then it was two and now it has crept up to three. Well, we have good news for you, all recommendations on how much you MUST spend should be ignored, our only advice is to sit down and work out what you CAN afford. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to buy a beautiful engagement ring. A good jeweller will be able to work with you and your budget to come up with a beautiful design to suit your needs.
2. The Carat of a Diamond Determines How Big it Will Look
When talking about the carat of a diamond we are referring to its carat weight. There are 5 carats in a gram and one carat is made up of one hundred points. Consequently, it is a mistake to think that all diamonds of the exact same carat weight will be the exact same size. For example, you can have two diamonds of the exact same weight but, because of the proportions, they will look very different in size. A round brilliant diamond will typically look larger than an princess cut or cushion cut of the same carat weight.
3. You have to propose with an engagement ring
Many guys feel immensely pressured to surprise their partner by proposing with the perfect ring. For some gents this might be fine, they have confidence that they will make the right choice. For others, this can cause a lot of stress, not sure that they will get the ring right. More frequently guys are opting to propose to their partner without an engagement ring. Some guys use a temporary engagement ring while others purchase a diamond and propose with it alone. This allows the opportunity for you to choose the ring together, ensuring you both get to contribute and you are both happy with the final result.
4. Your wedding ring must match your engagement ring
It is true that many choose a matching engagement and wedding ring. However, this is not essential. More and more people are experimenting with unique designs and contrasting combinations. Just because you have a classic solitaire engagement ring does not mean that you must choose a classic wedding ring. This can be the opportunity to redefine your ring with a custom designed wedding ring incorporating colour, texture or contrasting metals.
5. Custom Designing an Engagement Ring is Difficult and Expensive
Choosing to have a ring custom made can be a longer process than selecting a ring off-the-shelf. However, there is no need for it to be challenging, in fact, many would say that the design process made it even more special. When choosing to have a ring custom made, you get to choose every detail about the ring from the metal to the diamond or gemstone to the finest details. The ring is made especially for you with every aspect carefully considered.
It is also assumed by many that custom making an engagement ring in an unaffordable option. Although it might be marginally more expensive, the differences between the quality of the ring will be incomparable. At Larsen Jewellery we will work with you to create a beautiful custom made ring to suit your budget without compromising on the quality.
