27 Nov 2013
If you are born in December you are lucky to have more than one birthstone. Originally, the birthstone of December was Turquoise. However, over the years other gemstones have been accepted as December’s birthstone, including Zircon, Lapis Lazuli and, according to Hindu beliefs, topaz. The most recent change was in 2002, when the birthstone was changed to Tanzanite.
Tanzanite is one of the more recent gemstone discoveries, with the first recorded discovery in 1954. As the name suggests, Tanzanite
was first discovered in Tanzania.
Tanzanite is highly sought after for its beautiful deep violet colour. A good quality tanzanite will be found in a colours ranging from blues similar to sapphires through to ultra-marines. Interestingly, tanzanite’s are more blue in colour when viewed under natural light and under artificial light they appear more violet in colour. It is important to note that a large percentage of tanzanite’s are heat treated to enhance the violet colour that makes them so desirable.
Tanzanites, when first discovered, were considered an affordable alternative to sapphires, however they are have become so popular they have now exceeded sapphires
in value. Unlike many other gemstones
can be found in multiple locations all over the world, tanzanite can only be found in a small area in Tanzania, contributing to the value of this exquisite gemstone.
The colour of tanzanite is believed to bring the wearer good fortune and success. It is believed to link the heart and mind, allowing the wearer to live a more compassionate life whilst also strengthening the wearer’s immune system. Overall, it is believed that when tanzanite is worn it will promote a positive and healthy life. Tanzanite is truly a special gemstone, the natural beauty, rareness and good fortune that is believed to bless the wearer, makes it a fabulous gemstone to set into a custom made piece of jewellery for your loved one.
