4 Questions to Ask Your Jeweller
Have you arrived at that moment in life when you know you have found the one and you’re ready to propose?
This momentous decision is usually followed by a trip to your jeweller to find the perfect engagement ring. For many of you, this will be your first experience of purchasing a significant piece of jewellery and it comes as no surprise that this can also cause you to feel an overwhelming amount of pressure. No one wants to get this wrong.
It is important that you are well prepared for your first appointment, it is usually 30 minutes to an hour that can fly by. The last thing you want is to leave feeling unsure, or feeling like some important questions have gone unanswered.
So, to assist you with your first meeting, we have put together a list of 5 questions that you should ask your jeweller during your appointment. And, remember it is quite common to have 2 – 3 meetings before making your final decision.
One of our first suggestions is to ask your jeweller to show you what you could get for your budget. This creates a great starting point and puts you both on the same page. The last thing you want is to spend an hour looking at designs you cannot afford.
What are the 4c’s? Is the diamond certified? And if so, who by?
When your jeweller shows you diamond options it is important that they give you the independently graded specifications for each diamond. It is also important to ask which organisation has certified the diamond. There are several diamond grading institutions, all with different standards. The market leader, GIA (Gemological Institute of America), has the strongest global reputation for having the strictest grading standards. Other reputable institutions are AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories), GSL (Gem Studies Laboratory) or AusCert (Scientific Gem Testing Laboratories).
Can you show me the diamond under magnification?
Sometimes, a diamond will only reveal its true nature when you view it through a 10 x loupe, this is the standard magnification for grading diamonds. It is when you view a diamond up close that you realise, what reads as a small difference, can make a big difference in real life.
What are your After Sales Services?
This is one of the most important questions to ask. An engagement ring is a sentimental purchase, designed to be worn every day for a lifetime. Just like any significant purchase, an engagement ring will require “check-ups” to ensure the longevity of the ring. At Larsen Jewellery we offer a free yearly polishing and plating service for your ring, at this time we will also check that your diamond/s is set securely. This service often costs around $100 from other providers. A cost that will add up considerably over the years.
Which metal should I choose?
One of the biggest decisions is which metal to go with. The most popular are white metals followed by rose and yellow golds. If you prefer a white metal, then you have a couple of options. Platinum is seen as the most superior due to its intrinsic strength and pure white colour but this also comes at a premium. White gold is a wonderful alternative but it is worth keeping in mind that it requires rhodium plating every few years to maintain its bright white colour.
