Champagne & Cognac Diamonds
Champagne and Cognac Diamonds have become more and more popular in recent years. However, they are still more affordable than white diamonds making them a wonderful option when wanting to add a touch of colour to your engagement ring! They look stunning against different coloured metals and look beautiful when set next to white diamonds. One of Larsen Jewellery’s popular designs the Serenity (cognac) is a beautiful example of one of our designs set with a Cognac diamond.
Champagne and Cognac diamonds are yellow to brown in colour and range from a light yellow brown to a dark brown. They are graded by their colour from C, being the lightest, to C7, being the darkest. Cognac diamonds that are dark chocolate in colour are known as fancy browns. The darker the colour the higher the value.
Brown coloured diamonds are one of the most common types of coloured diamonds available. It is estimated that over 50% of cognac diamonds on the market are sourced from the Argyle mine in Western Australia, the same mine famous for the Argyle Pink Diamonds. The remainder of cognac diamonds are mined predominately in Africa. Brown diamonds get their colour from defects in the chemical structure of the crystal. Depending on how and the amount of Nitrogen contained within the diamond determines the deepness of the brown colour. Some brown coloured diamonds have a beautiful tinge of orange in them, hence the name Cognac. This variety is more rare than other brown diamonds on the market and is reflected in the price.
