Matching Your Skin Tone to Your Engagement Ring
April 20, 2015
Choosing an engagement ring is somewhat like choosing an outfit. Although an engagement ring is a much more permanent, ‘never’ changing choice and for this reason alone it is important to get it right. When choosing what we wear we consider our style, what suits us and what colour compliments our skin tone. The same is important when choosing your engagement ring. Luckily with an engagement ring your options are more limited. First you need to consider your metal choice and then which gemstone will compliment you.
When choosing your metal there are three main choices, white metals, yellow gold or rose gold. The most popular choice are white metals, either white gold or platinum and then it is a close race between rose and yellow gold. The general rule is white coloured metals suit cooler skin tones and gold suits warmer skin tones. In the middle is rose gold, which many would agree is the most versatile and suits most skin tones.
How do you know if you have cool or warm skin toned?
Those with a pink / rosy undertone who sunburn easily and find it difficult to tan usually fall under the cool skin tone category. The opposite of this, those with darker / olive skin who are less susceptible to sunburn and tan naturally fall into the warm skin tone. If you don’t fall under either of these two categories then you most likely have ‘neutral’ skin tone. Neutral skin tone are the ‘lucky’ ones, they generally will easily suit most coloured metals and gemstones.
So, what about the centre stone? Diamonds are the most popular choice for an engagement ring and luckily you can’t really go wrong with a diamond no matter what your skin tone is. However, not everyone has their heart set on a diamond some prefer a splash of colour and love coloured gemstones. So what colour suits you best? If you have cooler skin tone then bright colours like blue, pink, green and purple will look great on you. If you have darker skin tones then warmer, earthier colours such as oranges, browns, yellows, reds and darker hues will look great on you. For those with neutral skin tones, try mixing and matching warmer coloured metals with cooler gemstones. You have the freedom to experiment.
Remember these are just guidelines! When choosing your engagement ring, it is a good to have an idea of what suits you best but the most important thing is to stick to your style and what you have your heart set on… Chances are what you have in mind is the perfect choice for you!!
