Should I go engagement ring shopping with my significant other or go it alone?

When announcing your engagement to your loved ones the first questions are usually along the lines of “was it a surprise?” and “do you love the ring?” the answers to these is an evenly mixed response. Although there are still many partners who decide to brave it alone and keep the whole proposal, including the ring a surprise, the growing trend is to propose without a ring and go shopping for the ring together.
Therefore, the big question is whether you should go ring shopping with your partner or stick to the old fashioned way of surprising her with a ring in the hope that she loves it! The answer to this must be determined case by case. The only instance we highly recommend ring shopping with your partner is when you have no confidence in your choice… at all! If you are clued in to your partner’s style and you confidently know you can pick out an outfit, any gift and also the ring she will love then we say go for it!
If you have decided to go down the path of a surprise proposal then there is no harm in seeking out some friendly help. Even if it is just a second opinion or the tick of approval, her best friends, closest sisters and Mum are the ones to turn to. There is a good chance she has worded them up on what she loves and (perhaps more importantly) what she doesn’t like.
For those whose instincts are telling them to ditch the surprise and shop together then we are here to reassure you that there is no shame in that. Proposing without the ring does not mean the proposal needs to be lackluster and void of the surprise factor. There are many creative ways to propose without the ring or with a temporary proposal ring. Here at Larsen Jewellery, we have designed a ring for just this purpose, a simple silver band engraved with the words “Will you marry me?”. It costs just $250 and comes with a piccolo of champagne and handmade chocolates! Some might even argue that ring shopping together makes the high of the proposal linger even longer.
Remember the journey of choosing an engagement ring together is an exciting one. We always recommend getting a feel for what you like before your first appointment, it can be overwhelming to be presented with a cabinet full of rings to choose from. And one last tip but perhaps the most important, discuss the budget before setting out on this journey together. It can be easy to get swept away with all the options and find yourself forking out more than you needed to. If you want to keep the cost a secret from your partner, have this discussion with your jeweller beforehand, this way they can guide the appointment accordingly and can stick to options within the budget, avoiding any awkward conversations later down the track!
