For Guys: A Simplified Guide to Engagement Ring Shopping

August 30, 2017

At Larsen Jewellery, we are faced every day with guys who are embarking on the journey of choosing an engagement ring. Some gents are cool, calm and collected and have an air of confidence that gives us a sneaking suspicion that, they have found out exactly what she wants. Others (often the majority) appear to be a little more overwhelmed.

So with our knowledge and years of experience working along side grooms-to-be, we are going to simplify things and cut straight to the point with a brief and helpful guide to engagement ring shopping. With a quick read and a little research, you will be ready for your appointment.

First things first…

1. BUDGET  Before anything else you should decide on your budget, settle on it and stick to it. There is no point spending an hour with a jeweller admiring a cabinet of designs and a range of diamonds if none or only a few are within your budget.

2.  Find out what she likes. If she has not already made it blatantly obvious by either directly telling you or leaving hints everywhere, then you may not want to make your appointment just yet. Go straight to her closest friend or family member who you know will point you in the right direction. It should go without saying that they are not to whisper a word to anyone.

3.  To go with a colourful gemstone or not? Yes, it can be a more affordable than a diamond, but if she is not the colourful type or has never alluded to having a favourite gem, then a diamond is likely to be the safer option.

4. The 4C’s (Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat) This is the most important terminology to familiarise yourself with before stepping into your first appointment. It is the diamond grading system used to demonstrate the quality of a diamond. Your jeweller will be able to explain it to you in greater depth and show you the differences whilst viewing diamonds, but familiarising yourself with it will save you from feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar technical terminology!

5. Gather a few images. To make the most out of your initial appointment it is always handy to go prepared with a few visual references. Whether it is a classic solitaire, a halo diamond ring or a truly unique design, the imagery will help communicate to your jeweller exactly what you have in mind. Another top tip is to try and find a photograph where your loved one’s hand is visible, this can help our designers get the ring size close to correct.

6. Be realistic with your expectations It is rare that a guy will walk out of an initial appointment and have settled on a design, a diamond and paid a deposit. It usually takes 2 and sometimes more appointments to finalise a custom made design. So surrender to the journey and enjoy! Most importantly allow enough time so you don’t put yourself under unnecessary stress!
