Engagement Rings

What designs can we choose from?

Everything at Larsen’s is custom-made so you can either choose a design from our website or have one of our team of talented jewellers create something totally unique for you. If you have seen something you like elsewhere, we can adapt that to suit the stone of your choice.

I already have a design in mind – can you make it for me?

Yes, absolutely. All our engagement rings are custom made so you can have any design. Just make a no-obligation design appointment to speak to one of our jewellers and we can give you a quote. If you have a picture of the design you want, bring it along or, alternatively, we can create a sketch based on your ideas.

What type of setting should I choose?

There are many different types of settings for engagement rings. For an overview of the different types of settings, please read the engagement rings settings page in our Engagagement Ring Guide. Claw settings are the most popular but there are many other alternatives, and even for claw set engagement rings there are a range of options, including the number of claws and the shape and thickness of the claws. If you come in for an obligation-free design appointment, one of our jewellers can advise you on the various options and show you some examples to the different types of engagement ring settings.

What is the difference between Platinum and White Gold?

To learn more about different metals, please have a look at the Learn about Precious Metals section of our site or read the Platinum vs White Gold page in our Engagement Ring Guide.

Are there other options for those who don’t want a diamond?

Larsen’s team of talented jewellery designers have a passion for coloured gemstones as well as diamonds. We sell a wide range of precious and semi-precious coloured gemstones and source our stones from a wide network of suppliers from all over the world. We can show you a range of loose gemstones to choose from and we take the time to explain the characteristics of the stones allowing you to make an educated choice. From the deep purple hues of a Tanzanite, the cool blue of an aquamarine or the fiery red of a ruby, we share your passion for colour. See our gallery for some examples of Engagement Rings Designs with coloured gemstones.

If we already have our diamond, can you still make the ring?

Yes, absolutely. We welcome the opportunity to make your ring, even if you already have the diamond. Please note there is a small surcharge for setting your own stone.

I want to surprise her. Can you guide me to choosing the right ring?

To help you choose the perfect engagement ring, we have put together some Tips For Proposing. You are also welcome to give us a call or come in for an appointment where one of our jewellers can answer any questions you might have.

Can I buy just the stone and let her choose the ring later?

Yes you can. This might be the best way to do it if you are not completely sure what design she would like. We’ll supply the diamond in a lovely presentation box, which is sure to impress. You can come in together after the proposal to choose the engagement ring design.

I don’t know her finger size – what shall I do?

If she wears a ring on her right hand ring finger, we can work out the size if you can sneak it in to us. Alternatively, you can try her ring on your finger and see where it fits. Or you can get a girlfriend to ask discreetly if she has ever had her finger sized. You could also draw around the inside of a ring, or tie a piece of string around her finger. These methods are not exact, but can give us a good idea. Even if it is not the perfect fit the first time, we include one free resize with our engagement rings to alleviate any problems. Please see our Re-size Policy for further details.

How much does an engagement ring cost?

The price depends on the design, choice of metal and most importantly on the choice of diamond or coloured gemstone. The prices of all the rings in our engagement ring gallery are included in the description of the rings. Simply click on the item in the gallery to see the details for any of the rings. For other designs, we welcome you to make an appointment or send us an email with the specifications you are considering, and one of our jewellers will get back to you with a quote. The prices listed on our website include the ring itself as well as any small gemstones, but exclude the larger stones which you’ll be able to pick from a wide selection of loose diamonds or coloured gemstones to suit your budget. The designs shown on our website can be made with a range of different diamond shapes, sizes, colours, etc and we can work towards almost any budget.

How long does it take to have a custom made engagement ring made?

It usually takes 3-6 weeks from when you place your order, depending on the complexity of the design.

Can I see the ring before the diamonds are set?

All our rings are custom made, and sometimes it is hard to imagine what it will look like. We alleviate this problem by allowing you to try on the ring before the stones are set, and if you want to make changes at that stage, you can. For more details on what design changes can be made at that stage, please refer to our Design Change Policy.

Can I make changes to the design once you have started making my ring?

Our ultimate objective is to make sure that you are happy with your engagement ring. We recognise that it can be difficult to visualise how the finished ring will look and that some design changes might be required along the way to achieve exactly what you want. For this reason, we give you the opportunity to make small changes to the design before any stones are set, without incurring additional costs. There are several types of alterations that are included in our service, such as changing the finger size, changing the profile of the band, reducing the width, etc, however if the changes are significant or the piece has to be remade, you may incur additional charges. For further information, please read our Design Change Policy.

Do you provide a guarantee on your engagement rings?

Larsen Jewellery prides itself on the high standard of workmanship that goes into making every engagement ring. Reflecting our high quality standards, all our engagement rings come with a lifetime guarantee against faults in materials and workmanship. To ensure your precious stones are securely set, you must bring in your piece of jewellery for an annual check. This is a free service and is included with all our engagement rings. Our guarantee covers any defect caused by faulty materials or workmanship. Our guarantee does not cover defects relating to general wear and tear, scratching, damage caused by accidents, neglect or misuse, or any resulting loss of the ring or precious stones from the ring. If the ring has been repaired or modified by someone other than ourselves the guarantee is void. Engagement rings not custom made by us are not covered by the guarantee. In the rare event of a problem, please inform us and bring back your engagement ring as soon as possible for inspection. Rings that are covered by the guarantee will be repaired free of charge. Rings that are not covered will be quoted for repair. For the details and terms of our guarantee, please refer to the Company Policies section of our website.

Loose Diamonds & Coloured Gemstones

What types of precious stones can I choose from?

Larsen Jewellery sells loose diamonds as well as a wide range of coloured gemstones such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds. You are welcome to come in to our studio for an appointment with one of our jewellers who can show you a range of stones to choose from and answer any questions you may have.

Can I view a range of diamonds before selecting one?

Yes you can. At Larsen Jewellery you can choose your diamond from a wide selection of loose diamonds and one of our jewellers will explain all about the 4 C’s whilst showing you real examples of the different colour and clarity grades amongst other things. Whilst the internet is a valuable tool for research, it is very important to be able to view your diamond before you purchase it. There is a lot of conflicting information available, and this can be confusing for the newcomer to the world of diamonds. The team at Larsen’s comprises not only qualified jewellers, but diamond graders with over 70 years of combined experience, ensuring we can answer any questions you have relating to quality and value of diamonds.

What are the 4 C’s?

The 4 C’s is a term that refers to the Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat of a diamond which are the key characteristics that determine a diamond’s quality and hence value. You can read more about the 4 C’s in the Learn about Diamonds section of our website.

How do I choose the diamond?

The first thing to do when looking to purchase a diamond is to learn about the 4 C’s – Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat – which are the characteristics of a diamond that determine its quality and hence value. You can look at the Learn about Diamonds section and the How to Buy a Diamond page on our website as a starting point. One of our jewellers would also be happy to answer any questions you may have and show you a range of loose diamonds to choose from.

Are all your diamonds independently certified?

All our diamonds larger than 0.50 carat come with an independent certificate from GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), GSL (Gem Studies Laboratory) or DCLA (Diamond Certification Lab of Australia), and smaller diamonds can be certified if requested. Diamonds should always be accompanied by an independent certificate to verify all the scientific details of the stones. The person selling you the stone should not be the person who has issued the certificate to ensure an unbiased opinion. There are a large number of different certification laboratories, and whilst they grade to the same standards, their descriptions of these grades can vary. For instance, the highest cut grade used by GIA is called “Excellent”, whilst GSL uses the term “Very Good” for their highest cut grade. This can be confusing, but our diamond experts can lead you through the common pitfalls of purchasing a diamond. Whilst certification is essential, diamonds should not be bought on the strength of the certificate alone. Some certification labs are not as reputable as others, and anything that looks too good to be true, usually is. For all of these reasons and more, it is essential to be able to view your diamond before purchase.

Do you guarantee that your diamonds are conflict free?

Larsen Jewellery prides itself on the high standard of workmanship that goes into making every engagement ring. Reflecting our high quality standards, all our engagement rings come with a lifetime guarantee against faults in materials and workmanship. To ensure your precious stones are securely set, you must bring in your piece of jewellery for an annual check. This is a free service and is included with all our engagement rings. The guarantee is void if it has been more than 18 months since your last check.

Wedding Ring Experience

What designs can we choose from?

We have an extensive range of designs in our studio and on our website, but as everything is custom-made, we can do almost anything! We welcome your own ideas too.

Is it only plain bands we can make?

No, with the Wedding Ring Experience you are not limited to just plain wedding bands. If you would like engraving, diamonds or a mix of metals, one of our jewellers will complete these design features after you have finished making the plain wedding bands. You will still make make the actual rings yourselves – it is only the design features the jeweller will do for you, e.g. adding diamonds to the ring. If your ring needs to be fitted to an engagement ring, the jeweller will also do this for you after your appointment.

Can we incorporate diamonds and engraving in the rings?

Yes, absolutely! The are almost no limits to what design you can choose as the rings are completely custom made. If you want to have engraving or diamonds added, this will be done by one of your jewellers after your appointment at a small additional charge.

Will my wedding ring match my engagement ring?

Yes, we always make sure the wedding ring matches perfectly with your engagement ring. Our jewellers will take all the dimensions of your engagement ring, and while guiding you through the process, will make sure it matches exactly. If the wedding ring needs to be fitted to the shape of your engagement ring, the jeweller will usually do this after your appointment for a small additional charge (typically around $100-$300). We can tell you exactly how much this would be if you come in for an obligation free design appointment and show us your engagement ring.

Will the rings really look perfect if we make them?

We guarantee that the rings will look as professional and perfect as if one of our jewellers had made them for you.

How far ahead should we book?

It is best to make your rings at least a couple of months before your wedding to leave plenty of time for us to complete any follow-up work, such as engraving or setting diamonds (this usually takes 3-4 weeks, but can be done faster if you have a particular deadline). This way you also won’t have to worry about the rings in the busy weeks leading up to the wedding. If you just want plain rings, you are able to take them with you on the day. We can also send them to you if you aren’t able to collect them yourself. The weekends book up really quickly so we would advise booking 1-2 months in advance to ensure you get the weekend of your choice. We offer a $200 discount for weekday bookings, so if you are able to do it during the week this may be an attractive option for you.

How long does it take to make our rings?

It takes only around 4 hours to make a pair of wedding rings! If you want plain rings, you can take them with you after the appointment. Alternatively, if you would like design additions such as diamonds or engraving, you need to leave your rings behind for one of our jewellers to complete the design features. Follow-up work usually takes around 3-4 weeks (but can be done faster if you have a particular deadline).

How long does any follow-up work take, e.g. setting of diamonds?

Follow-up work such as engraving or setting diamonds, which is done by the jeweller after your appointment, usually takes around 3-4 weeks, but we are very good at meeting tight deadlines, so if you have a particular deadline, just let us know.

Do we do everything ourselves?

Yes, you actually make the rings yourselves, but you’ll have your own personal jeweller by your side every step of the way to guide you through the process. The Wedding Ring Experience has been set up to allow you to do the entire process yourselves. However, if there are any particular aspects you would prefer not to do, your jeweller is there to help.

Do you need to be creative to do this?

No, you don’t need any particular skill or creative flair to make each other’s wedding rings. One of our jewellers will be with you every step of the way to guide you through the process. Anyone can do it! We’ve had hundreds of couples make each other’s wedding rings and they always end up perfect.

Is this a group activity?

No, it is not a group activity. Each couple has their own dedicated jeweller for the length of the appointment.

How much does it cost?

For a full price list, please go to the Wedding Ring Prices page. The prices for the Wedding Ring Experience include a light lunch, champagne at the end, photos provided on a CD, and a lifetime of annual polishing to keep your rings in a sparkling condition.

Is a deposit required to make a booking?

You do not need to pay anything in order to come in for an obligation-free design consultation. It is only if you decide to go ahead and want to book a date for your Wedding Ring Experience that we ask for a $300 deposit to confirm your booking. Larsen Jewellery specialises in custom made fine jewellery. This includes engagement and wedding rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings and more. We make our jewellery to order using the highest quality materials, incorporating stunning hand-engraving, diamonds and coloured gemstones as requested. If you can imagine it, we can create it; as long as the design is technically possible and will safely hold any chosen stones. Make an obligation-free appointment today to discuss your custom design with one of our friendly jewellers.

I need ideas for a present – can you help me?

We have a large gift range of beautiful ready-to-wear designs, available to view and purchase in each of our stores. If you are looking for something more specific that cannot be found in-store, we can custom make the item for you. The custom made process can take anywhere from three to six weeks, depending on the design. Whether it be an anniversary or birthday gift, or to mark any special occasion, the Larsen Jewellery team can happily assist you.

What can I give her for our wedding anniversary?

There are no strict rules as to what you must buy for an anniversary present, although the ‘eternity’ band is the most popular choice nowadays. An eternity band is similar to a wedding band, and is generally worn on the opposite side of the engagement ring to the wedding ring. Some women prefer to wear theirs on the opposite hand. These days most customers are matching the eternity band exactly to the style of the wedding band, but if the ring is worn on the opposite hand it can be a completely different style. The main feature is that it is set with small diamonds or small coloured gemstones, and is in the same metal as the engagement and wedding rings. Diamond stud earrings, or a diamond pendant are also popular choices, being classic and timeless in style. We have a stunning gift range of ready-to-wear pieces in store for such occasions, and if we don’t have what you’re after we can custom make an item for you. Please allow anywhere from three to six weeks for custom made pieces.
