Pear

Pear shape or pear cut diamonds are also known as ‘tear drop’ diamonds due to their shape. The pear cut is another soft-sided ‘fancy shape’ diamond. Pear cuts do not have an ideal ratio such as the brilliant cut diamond, and they are to be chosen based on your own visual preference of shape.

Some customers prefer a long, slim pear shape, whereas other opt for a shorter, wider pear. It comes down to personal taste. Due to the shape of pear cut diamonds, they will usually show a ‘bow tie effect’ to some degree. This characteristic literally looks like a black bow tie through the centre of the stone. You may not even notice this unless it is pointed out to you, however when choosing this shape from a selection, it is recommended to opt for a stone with a faint bow tie rather than a strong one.

What Our Customers Say

Larsen Jewellery were amazing throughout the whole experience of having our engagement ring designed and crafted. I appreciate all the effort they went to to get the ring out to me on time being in a rural location. The ring is absolutely stunning and has been crafted with such skill.

We had 3 rings made by Larsen Jewellery and were looked after by Alex Somerville. Turnaround times were honoured, promises kept and getting in for an appointment at short notice when it suited our schedule wasn't an issue. Our rings were made specifically to our own preference, with good advice from our jeweller where we needed it. All of the rings are wonderful and we're very happy with our results. I've no problem recommending Alex, we couldn't have asked for better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

Which way should a pear-shaped diamond ring be worn?

While this is a much-debated topic (even amongst our own designers) there does not seem to be one right way to wear a pear-shaped diamond ring. Some prefer the look of the point to face the tips of the fingers in order to create a flattering slimming effect to the hands, while others prefer it to point down when looking at their hand. It’s ultimately up to you and what looks the most flattering when you wear it.

Is the pear shape and teardrop diamond shape the same thing?

Yes, these names both refer to the same shape. While the proper name for this diamond cut is pear shape, it is commonly referred to as the teardrop shape too.

Are pear shape diamonds cheaper than round diamonds?

Yes, pear shape diamonds can be 10-30% cheaper than the equivalent carat weight in a round brilliant diamond. They also appear larger than a round diamond due to a larger visible surface area making them an excellent choice economically.

What are the best designs for a pear shaped diamond ring?

Pear shaped diamonds suit most designs and styles but look particularly stunning in solitaire, halo and 3 stone designs and are especially popular when used in boho and vintage styles.
