Platinum Engagement Rings

Platinum is the rarest of all the metals used for engagement rings. It is also the purest of these metals, with Platinum alloys being composed of 95% pure platinum. This purity makes it the ideal choice for people with skin that is sensitive to other metals.

Platinum is very malleable and strong, making it an ideal metal for delicate jewellery. Due to its high density, it is very durable and weighs significantly more than an equivalent ring made in 18ct gold. The natural colour of platinum is greyish white, and when polished does not require rhodium plating like white gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

Is a platinum ring better than white gold?

Although similar in appearance, these are actually two very different metals with very different properties. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and your design choices can play a big part in determining which metal is best for your piece.
Our jewellers work with these metals every day and will be happy to guide you in your selection. For more details on how a white gold and platinum ring compare, read our helpful guide here.

Why are platinum rings more expensive than gold rings?

There are a few reasons why platinum jewellery can be more expensive than gold jewellery. One reason is that platinum is denser than gold therefore a platinum ring will weigh more than the same ring would in gold. For example, a ring that weighs 10g in 18ct white gold will weigh 13.7g in platinum. The other contributing factor is that working with platinum is generally more labour intensive. The dense nature of platinum means it takes longer to achieve a high polish than it does in gold, this additional work is reflected in the pricing.

What kinds of designs are better suited to being made in platinum?

Platinum rings are better suited for fine or delicate details, or designs with small diamonds set in fine claws, as you are less likely to lose as much material with general wear and tear.
However, if you have engraved patterns or bevelled edges, you may want to consider white gold instead, as white gold will retain its polish for longer and be less likely to bruise and become dull.

What is the hallmark for platinum?

Platinum rings are often marked with the following hallmarks: PLAT, PT, 900, 950, 960. The platinum we use is a minimum 95% pure platinum and is alloyed with other platinum group metals.
