Highly recommend the experience with Larsen! I went in to the engagement ring design process with a few key ideas and little knowledge about the process, and Rachel was unbelievably helpful from start to finish in reaching a design that I was really happy with. The sketch and render process was a great touch and gave me a lot of confidence in locking in a design. My fiancée and I both love the ring! We couldn't be happier with the unique design as well as the quality craftsmanship. Would highly recommend going with the team at Larsen.

Larsen Jewellery were fantastic in helping us design an engagement ring. Celeste was so supportive and knowledgeable throughout the process, and we were thrilled with the result. She took the time to help me design the ring and to choose the stones, and was so helpful every step of the way! We cannot thank them enough!

We approached Larsen Jewellers in early September to get an engagement ring made. I wanted to propose on a dive trip to Indonesia in November. When it came to Diamond choices ,my partner was very picky. Larsens bent over backwards to accommodate us, giving us numerous options. In the end my partner found a diamond elsewhere. Larsens did not hesitate to obtain it and made the process very easy. This process also took a few weeks and the window to get the ring made in time was fast closing.I called Larsens 5 days before we departed to see how things were going and was advised that the ring was scheduled to be completed well after we had gone overseas. This was due to our delaying the choice of diamond and sourcing it elsewhere, not due to Larsens. When I explained the situation They literally dropped everything and put a rush on the ring. Five days later I had it in my hand when I got on the flight.I cannot express my gratitude for Larsens patience, helpfulness and overall attitude to us being difficult. Nothing was too much trouble and even though they rushed the final part of building our ring it came out amazing. Thanks to Emma and Louisa and all the team.

Emerald, tsavorite and tourmaline are gemstones in stunning shades of green and are well suited to a number of different engagement ring designs. While the emerald cut was designed specifically to show off an emerald gemstone, emeralds are suited to many different types of cuts, from round to oval and beyond. Elongated cuts like oval are often more available because of the way emerald crystal grows.

Green stones like emerald look beautiful paired with all gold colours, though yellow gold is a classic pairing. White gold gives a relatively neutral palette to work with if you want the centre stone to really shine, and rose gold can be complementary to emeralds, tsavorites and tourmalines with teal or blue tones. With white diamond accents or side stones, green stones like tsavorite shine and sparkle.

Emeralds with high clarity grades are exceptionally rare. You can generally expect to see visible inclusions in most emeralds, so much so that these inclusions are referred to as the internal ‘jardin’ meaning garden in French. Inclusions can make the gemstone more fragile so, if you want to create an engagement ring design with a larger centre stone, we typically recommend tsavorite and tourmaline rather than emerald.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

What is an emerald engagement ring?

An emerald engagement ring features an emerald gemstone as the focal point, offering a distinctive and elegant alternative to traditional diamond engagement rings.

Can emerald engagement rings be worn everyday?

While emeralds are reasonably hard (ranking 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale), they are quite brittle and can be more prone to chipping and damage compared to other gemstone options such as sapphires. It's advisable to be careful when wearing an emerald engagement ring, and take it off if engaging in activities that may expose the gem to harm, such as going to the gym. Choosing a stone with expert guidance, as well as regular maintenance and protective settings, can all help to make sure your emerald ring stays beautiful.

What does an emerald engagement ring mean?

The lush green hue of emeralds has long been associated with nature and renewal, making it a meaningful choice for a couple embarking on a lifelong journey together. It has also been associated with growth, symbolising the evolving bond shared between two partners.

Are emeralds too soft for engagement rings?

Emeralds can be more prone to scratches and damage compared to harder gemstones like sapphires or diamonds, so while they can be chosen for engagement rings, they are generally most suitable for dress rings or other jewellery. Protective settings and regular maintenance can help with this, but couples opting for emerald engagement rings should be mindful of the gem's relative brittle nature and take precautions to ensure the stone's longevity and beauty over time.

Are emerald engagement rings popular?

Emerald engagement rings for women are quite popular for those seeking a distinctive and meaningful alternative to traditional diamond rings. Their vibrant colouring combined with their rich symbolism resonates with many people looking for a gemstone that holds both aesthetic and sentimental value.

Which setting style is best for emerald engagement rings?

A claw (prong) or bezel setting is often recommended for bespoke emerald engagement rings. These settings offer a balance between showcasing the gemstone and providing protection from chips or other damage. Claw settings allow more light to enter the stone, enhancing its brilliance, while bezel settings provide additional security. Vintage-inspired settings, such as a diamond halo, can also complement emeralds beautifully.

What is the best cut for an emerald engagement ring?

The best cut for an emerald engagement ring is the classic emerald cut. This step-cut style with rectangular facets is closest to the gemstone's natural crystal shape, which provides stability for the stone. The elongated lines of this cut is also very elegant and can enhance the gemstone's rich green colour.

How do I know if the tsavorite in my engagement ring is real?

If you're not sure about the authenticity of the tsavorite or other gemstone in your engagement ring, a qualified valuer or gemmologist can verify this for you, and may even provide a valuation or authenticity certificate. They have a variety of tools and techniques with which to correctly identify and distinguish the stone from other gemstone types and synthetics.

Are tsavorite engagement rings expensive?

The cost of tsavorite engagement rings varies based on factors such as carat weight, colour, clarity, and overall quality. While tsavorites can be less expensive than other precious gemstones like sapphires or rubies, high quality stones can still be pricier than other green gemstones. Opting for smaller carat weights, different cuts, or comparing setting styles can help manage costs. If you love the look of tsavorite engagement rings but have a specific price range in mind, your jewellery designer can work with you to create a ring to suit your style and budget.

Are tsavorite or emerald engagement rings more expensive?

The cost difference between tsavorite and emerald engagement rings depends on carat weight, cut, colour, and quality. Generally, classic emerald engagement rings tend to be more expensive due to their rarity, intense colour, and cultural significance. Tsavorites, while still valuable, are often more affordable, and can be more resilient than emeralds as they are less likely to be heavily included.

Is tsavorite good for an engagement ring?

When set carefully and taken care of, tsavorite can suitable for an engagement ring, although it is better suited to dress rings, earrings, and pendants. Like all coloured gemstones, tsavorites require more care than a diamond, and while they are more resilient than emeralds, as a type of garnet, they are softer and less durable than other green coloured stones such as sapphires,

Can you use tourmaline in an engagement ring?

Tourmaline is a less durable gemstone than other options, with a Mohs hardness ranging from 7 to 7.5, and we do not recommend its use as a centre stone in engagement rings. While tourmaline engagement rings can be beautifully coloured, they are not considered suitable for everday wear. Instead, we recommend choosing this gorgeous stone for jewellery such as pendants or earrings where there is less risk of damage.

Is tourmaline okay for an engagement ring?

Generally, tourmaline is not considered as suitable for an engagement ring centre stone as other coloured gemstone options, such as sapphire. However, with its variety of colours, durability, and uniqueness, tourmaline can be a great choice for other jewellery such as pendants and earrings.
