Emerald is the name given to a specific range of green to blueish green hues of the gemstone Beryl. Emeralds are valuable and rare gemstones that have been adored since ancient Egypt. The most desirable emeralds feature vivid colour saturation.  Not all beryls that are green are called emeralds. Beryls that fall outside of this particular range of green hues are simply referred to as green beryl.

Emeralds with high clarity grades are exceptionally rare. You can generally expect to see visible inclusions in most emeralds, so much so that these inclusions are referred to as the internal ‘jardin’ meaning garden in French.

Amazing service and beautifully designed engagement ring! I bought an custom made engagement ring and had the lovely Natalie help me create this for my fiancé. I did a lot of research before I made any appointments to see someone about creating a ring, Natalie was able to take that even further, explaining more than what you can find online and helping me design the perfect ring. They have ethically sourced diamonds, the gold is fair trade and a life time guarantee on the ring which was a big part in the decision.Do yourself a favour and see the team at Larsen Jewellery they will look after you well!

Wouldn’t hesitate recommending Larsen Jewellery. I bought my own sapphire and Chris turned it into just the piece of jewellery I had imagined. It was a great experience and I will definitely be coming back to Chris at Larsen in the future.

I couldn't be happier with Larsen's beautiful engagement ring for my partner. Not only was the ring stunning, the customer service was first class. Christopher was very knowledgeable and perfect for someone who doesn't know much about rings. They are more interested in tailoring the most suitable ring for your needs and not just quoting you the highest price.Would highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

What colour emerald is the most desirable?

The most popular and desirable colour for an emerald is a distinct, vividly saturated mid-green tone. Emeralds come in a wide variety of hues with varying degrees of tone and saturation, so it is important for you to choose a colour that appeals to your taste.

Can you wear an emerald engagement ring every day?

The suitability of an emerald engagement ring for everyday wear really comes down to the condition of each individual emerald.
Although emerald rates 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is a relatively brittle gemstone. It is uncommon to find an Emerald that doesn’t contain a number of inclusions. It is these inclusions that can make an emerald ring weaker and more fragile, which could result in chips and cracks if the gemstone is subjected to hard knocks. Our jewellers can help you find the best emerald for your design and advise you on any risks during everyday wear.

What is the best cut for an emerald engagement ring?

As the name suggests, one of the most popular shapes for an emerald gemstone, is the emerald cut. The elongated shape and step-cut facets lends itself well to the long hexagonal shape of the natural rough and leaves minimal wasted material. The emerald cut is wonderful for displaying the depth of colour that an emerald gemstone is desired for.

What kind of gemstone is an emerald?

An emerald is the name given to a particular colour of green beryl. Some lighter and less saturated shades of this green are simply referred to as green beryl. Beryl gemstones which contain more blueish/aqua hues are referred to as aquamarines.
