We welcome you to come in for an obligation-free design appointment with one of our jewellers who can advise you on choosing the perfect emerald engagement ring. We can also help you learn about diamonds and gemstones, as well as the particular characteristics of emeralds, to ensure that you make an informed decision when choosing your design.
Emerald, tsavorite and tourmaline are gemstones in stunning shades of green and are well suited to a number of different engagement ring designs. While the emerald cut was designed specifically to show off an emerald gemstone, emeralds are suited to many different types of cuts, from round to oval and beyond. Elongated cuts like oval are often more available because of the way emerald crystal grows.
Green stones like emerald look beautiful paired with all gold colours, though yellow gold is a classic pairing. White gold gives a relatively neutral palette to work with if you want the centre stone to really shine, and rose gold can be complementary to emeralds, tsavorites and tourmalines with teal or blue tones. With white diamond accents or side stones, green stones like tsavorite shine and sparkle.
Emeralds with high clarity grades are exceptionally rare. You can generally expect to see visible inclusions in most emeralds, so much so that these inclusions are referred to as the internal ‘jardin’ meaning garden in French. Inclusions can make the gemstone more fragile so, if you want to create an engagement ring design with a larger centre stone, we typically recommend tsavorite and tourmaline rather than emerald.
Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!
The most popular and desirable colour for an emerald is a distinct, vividly saturated mid-green tone. Emeralds come in a wide variety of hues with varying degrees of tone and saturation, so it is important for you to choose a colour that appeals to your taste.
The suitability of an emerald engagement ring for everyday wear really comes down to the condition of each individual emerald.
Although emerald rates 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is a relatively brittle gemstone. It is uncommon to find an Emerald that doesn’t contain a number of inclusions. It is these inclusions that can make an emerald ring weaker and more fragile, which could result in chips and cracks if the gemstone is subjected to hard knocks. Our jewellers can help you find the best emerald for your design and advise you on any risks during everyday wear.
As the name suggests, one of the most popular shapes for an emerald gemstone is the emerald cut. The elongated shape and step-cut facets lends itself well to the long hexagonal shape of the natural rough and leaves minimal wasted material. The emerald cut is wonderful for displaying the depth of colour that an emerald gemstone is desired for.
An emerald is the name given to a particular colour of green beryl. Some lighter and less saturated shades of this green are simply referred to as green beryl. Beryl gemstones which contain more blueish/aqua hues are referred to as aquamarines.
