Five Things to Consider when Planning Your Wedding Rings

27 Aug 2014

That time in your life has come. Your left hand has been adorned with your engagement ring for some months now and it is time to start considering that second, important piece of jewellery to sit beside it.
Before you walk into your jeweller, it is a good idea to do some preparation and consider your options. At Larsen, as jewellers who specialise in engagement and wedding rings, we have put together our top five tips to make your experience as smooth and stress free as possible:
1. Custom-made or Ready-made? There are two main choices when deciding on where to purchase your wedding rings. Do you choose a ready-made ring or do you have something custom designed? This is completely up to you. You may have an engagement ring that lends itself perfectly to a fitted wedding ring; in this case custom-made is the best option for you. Custom-made is the popular choice amongst many. Your design choices are endless, making it the best option for creating a ring that is unique to you.
2. Have your finger sized correctly! This is important, especially if you have chosen a design that includes beautiful, hand-engraved details or diamonds set all the way around. Take note that everybody’s hands react differently to the weather and can fluctuate significantly or not much at all.
Insider Tip: We do not recommend having your finger sized early in the morning or when it is hot as they are likely to be swollen. Likewise, at the other extreme, when your hands are cold.
3. Diamonds, Gemstones and Metal: These are the main choices you will need to consider. It is a good idea to browse the Internet or magazines for inspiration before your appointment with your jeweller to avoid too much confusion when confronted with a vast display of beautiful rings! There are no rules! Whether or not to have diamonds or gemstones is a personal choice. Often, as with your metal, your final choice may already be determined by your existing engagement ring and/or your budget.
4. Allow sufficient time! It is easy to push your wedding rings to the bottom of your list, but in reality they can take more time than you might expect. This is also the one tangible item from your big day that you will have with you for the rest of your life, so it is fair to say that these should not be last minute decisions. Insider Tip: We recommend getting started on your wedding rings at least a couple of months in advance.
5. Budget, budget, budget! Weddings are expensive and there are a lot of hidden costs that will pop up along the way. So when planning your budget, take the time to consider every detail and, most importantly, factor in your wedding rings! Once you have settled on your budget, stick to it! It can be very easy to get over excited when viewing diamonds and before you know it you have 1, 2 or 10 extra diamonds set into your ring!
