What is a Promise Ring?
9 Dec 2014
You may or may not be familiar with the term ‘Promise Ring’. What it is exactly is a sign of commitment to the one you love. A promise ring is the title given to any ring that is given to signify the commitment you have to your partner. Some consider it a pre-engagement ring. Unlike an engagement ring it does not come with the expectation that you are asking your partner for their hand in marriage.
What does a promise ring look like?
There are no rules when it comes to Promise Rings. Generally, they will not be as grand as an engagement ring. This is, however, completely up to you. You can be as creative or as minimal as you like. You may both wish to have a ring designed with some specific element in common or you may present your loved one with a promise ring unique to them.
Promise rings can also take on different meanings for different people. A promise ring might be worn by a couple who have no intention of getting married. This is to symbolise their commitment to each other. Others wear promise rings as a symbol of a promise that they have made to themselves and each other. An everyday reminder of a personal commitment they have made. One older meaning of a Promise Ring, and more often referred to as a Purity ring, is that they are worn to symbolise a pledge to sexual abstinence.
Promise rings are an old fashion idea but are becoming more and more relevant these days. Not everybody intends to get married but this doesn’t mean that the idea of wedding rings are exclusive to those that make a formal commitment. A wedding ring, like a promise ring, signifies your commitment, regardless of whether you choose to walk down the aisle with your loved one or not.
