Yellow gold is a very traditional choice of metal for engagement rings and remains a popular choice. At Larsen Jewellery, we typically use 18ct yellow gold, which contains 75% pure gold and provides the best combination of strength and purity. Many engagement rings made using yellow gold are made in combination with white gold, which is most often used for diamond settings.

Yellow gold is an alloy of pure gold and other metals, including silver and copper, and can be made in 18ct, 14ct and 9ct. The carat (ct) refers to the amount of pure gold in the alloy. Due to the softness of pure 24ct gold, yellow gold is alloyed to increase its strength and wearability. The colour of yellow gold can vary as a result of its gold content, with 18ct yellow gold being a richer yellow colour than 9ct yellow gold. 18ct yellow gold is also a harder wearing metal than 9ct gold and is preferable for use in engagement rings.

What Our Customers Say

Larsen Jewellery were amazing throughout the whole experience of having our engagement ring designed and crafted. I appreciate all the effort they went to to get the ring out to me on time being in a rural location. The ring is absolutely stunning and has been crafted with such skill.

We had 3 rings made by Larsen Jewellery and were looked after by Alex Somerville. Turnaround times were honoured, promises kept and getting in for an appointment at short notice when it suited our schedule wasn't an issue. Our rings were made specifically to our own preference, with good advice from our jeweller where we needed it. All of the rings are wonderful and we're very happy with our results. I've no problem recommending Alex, we couldn't have asked for better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

What is 18ct yellow gold?

18ct yellow gold is an alloy of 75% pure 24ct gold and 25% other hardening metals such as silver and copper. While there are other yellow gold alloys available (such as 9ct or 14ct) 18ct is the most resistant to damage over a lifetime of everyday wear, and therefore the recommended choice for a yellow gold engagement ring.

What is the hallmark for 18ct gold?

The hallmark for 18ct gold is 750. This represents the 750 parts per 1000 that is made up of pure gold. You can find this hallmark stamped on the inside of all the yellow gold engagement rings we have made in 18ct.

Why don’t you make yellow gold engagement rings out of pure 24ct gold?

Pure 24ct gold is a very malleable metal. This makes it too soft to be used in engagement rings as it would easily bend, warp and fracture. It is for this reason that we only use 18ct gold when making gold engagement rings as it has improved durability for everyday wear.

Are yellow gold engagement rings popular?

Yes! Since it is the most similarly coloured alloy to the natural colour of pure gold, this look is always going to be in demand and a timeless aesthetic. We are seeing a strong increase in popularity for yellow gold engagement rings, particularly in designs with white or champagne diamonds and certain coloured gemstones.
