Platinum is the purest of all the metals used for engagement rings, with Platinum alloys most commonly being composed of 95% pure platinum. This purity makes it the ideal choice for people with skin that is sensitive to other metals.
Platinum is very malleable and strong, making it a great metal choice for delicate jewellery. Due to its high density, it is very durable and weighs significantly more than an equivalent ring made in 18ct gold. The natural colour of platinum is greyish white, and when polished does not require rhodium plating like white gold.

Besides its timeless grey-white colour, platinum is one of the purest metals, with a standard alloy purity of around 95% in Australia. This means it is gentle on the skin, and is often an appropriate choice for those with sensitivities. Classic platinum engagement rings are also prized for their strength, durability and tarnish-resistance. While platinum does patina slightly with age, it is generally low maintenance and does not require rhodium plating, which makes it a great choice for a lifetime of wear.
Platinum is as sturdy and robust, which makes it ideal for fine details such as delicate claws with small diamonds, or intricate metalwork. All precious metals eventually wear over time, but platinum is extremely durable and will generally last over a lifetime. With its alluring pale colour, platinum engagement rings make an excellent choice to contrast with the bright hues of coloured gemstones, or to compliment a sparkling white diamond.
As a dense metal, a piece of platinum jewellery will be heavier than an equivalent piece created from another metal, such as white gold, due to its greater mass. Platinum is also more labour-intensive to work with than gold and other precious metals, due to its density and strength. Because of this, platinum will generally take longer to polish than gold, increasing the cost of the final piece.
Platinum hallmarks denote when an item is made from this metal, and the percentage of its purity (the ratio of platinum to any other present metals). Common hallmarks for platinum include PLAT, PT, 900, 950, 960. In Australia, the standard purity for platinum is usually approximately 95%, which is what we use in all our platinum pieces at Larsen Jewellery.
Like other precious metals, platinum can be resized if necessary. As platinum is dense and strong, however, it can be more labour intensive to resize compared to gold. We offer the first resize for bespoke platinum engagement rings we create free of charge, providing the ring fits the criteria set out on our policies page. For pieces outside of this criteria, please feel free to contact us for further information regarding ring resizing.
